Teeth grinding and sleep apnea are widely prevalent among both children and adults. Although these conditions don’t appear abnormal, they require immediate medical attention because they can cause serious health problems in the long run. Without timely treatment, these conditions can result in severe tooth pain, headaches, breathing problems, issues with chewing and speaking, heart ailments, high blood pressure, and more. Similarly, jaw joint disorders or bite problems also require immediate medical attention.

Oral appliances can help to open the airway by bringing the lower jaw or a person’s tongue forward during sleep. Patients prefer them because these devices are portable, small, quiet and easy to use. Oral appliance therapy is usually beneficial for patients with less severe sleep apnea.
Oral devices are grouped into two major types: (1) those that make the mandible and the attached tongue protrude; i.e. the mandibular advancement splints (MAS)/mandibular advancement devices (MAD) (2) those that hold the tongue forward; i.e. the tongue retaining devices, or tongue stabilizing devices.
Oral appliances are made from a variety of materials: thermoplastic polymers, thermoset polymers, wires, bands, and other prefabricated parts. Thermoplastic materials have an advantage over other types of materials in that they are easily used to construct an oral appliance.
