SEDATION DENTISTRY

It is natural to feel uneasy or anxious about your upcoming dental appointment. Whether you’re scheduled for a regular dental checkup or a root canal, the fear of pain that a dental procedure may cause is commonly experienced by children and adults alike.

Sometimes patients get so anxious that they may not receive proper treatment. Delayed medical attention, especially in oral health issues, can lead to severe health conditions in the future, including cardiac problems.

Fortunately, modern dentistry has advanced to address one of the most widely prevalent issues of anxiety. Today, patients have a variety of solutions to make treatments virtually painless and non-invasive. Sedation dentistry can relax and comfort patients in a dentist’s chair to receive appropriate treatment without pain or uneasiness. Sedation dentistry uses medication to calm anxiety and includes inhaled, oral, and intravenous sedatives.

As your trusted family dentistry, North Texas Family and Cosmetic Dentistry follow a holistic approach while providing dental care. Understanding your concerns and dealing with anxiety are critical aspects of our oral care services. We are proud to offer sedation dentistry in Garland, TX so that you can relax and enjoy a comfortable dental experience.

Since every patient has unique needs, our dentist will first examine your condition and gauge the severity of your anxiety. Based on your age, medical history, oral health condition, and anxiety levels, he or she will determine if sedation dentistry is the right choice for you.

LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR DENTAL HEALTH

With oral conscious sedation, your dentist gives you sedative medication (usually in pill form) about an hour before your procedure begins. Most dentists use triazolam, which is in the diazepam  family. But your dentist might use other medications, too, including zaleplon and lorazepam.
People who suffer from dental anxiety can have an easier time undergoing treatment with sedation dentistry. The medication used helps to reduce feelings of fear and stress so that patients can relax and feel comfortable.
The dental practitioner’s formulary i.e. the list of drugs a dentist can prescribe, includes Diazepam and other sedatives. Some dentists do prescribe these for their anxious patients. The dentist should be responsible for issuing the prescription for these patients.
Sedation dentistry offers patients a way to receive dental treatment in an environment that allows them to relax and remain calm. It has many benefits: reduced pain, shorter appointment times, little-to-no recall of the appointment, and a relieved sense of worry and stress.
